SIK rakes in record Rs 18 cr in 2 days

11 Aug 2008 - 96 Views - Shibani

MUMBAI: After a fairly sparse year in terms of box office success, the much-hyped Akshay Kumar-starrer Singh is Kinng has re-written box office history by raking in Rs 18 crore in the first two days. The film opened with net collections of Rs 8 crore on the first day and Rs 10 crore on the second day of its screening, breaking previous records set in the past 10 years. It is expected to close the opening weekend at Rs 28 crore, smashing all past box office records, too.

The film also managed the biggest-ever opening in North America, the Middle East and the UK. Till date, Om Shanti Om (OSO) and Jodhaa Akbar were the top grossers in the North American circuit. Singh is Kinng, however, beat both the films’ opening on Friday with a record haul of $2,32,000 as opposed to $2,27,000 (OSO) and $2,09,000 (Jodhaa Akbar). In the UAE, the film has brought in 1.4 million United Arab Emirates dirham (AED) while in the UK it has pocketed a cool £3,37,000.

Speaking to ET, producer Vipul Shah said: “We believe that the film will beat OSO and Welcome by 30% in its second week, which have been the highest grossers till date. The film was made for Rs 50 crore. We expect the film to make profits to all stakeholders from the second week.” The music rights of the film were sold to Junglee Music for a record Rs 13.2 crore.

Talking about the success formula, Mr Shah added: “This year has not been so entertaining for the audience so far. Singh is Kinng is a complete entertainer for the mass and the music was a hit even before the film was released, which has boosted the box office as well.”

Senior vice-president, Cinemax India, a mega multiplex, Devang Sampat has reasons to be happy. “All my properties have broken previous box office records. All across India, Singh is Kinng has managed to garner 30% more than the previous highest, which was Dhoom. This will be the blockbuster of the year. The hype that the film has created is mind-blowing,” he said.

The film has also created ripples in Pakistan. A Pakistan distributor, Hammad, narrated the mood, “The film has seen a crazy advance booking in Pakistani cinemas. There’s a heavy rush for tickets outside a theatre in Gujranwala. GT Road has got blocked because of this frenzy. Even extra shows, which were organised at 1 am in Lahore to accommodate people, ran fully booked.”

Explaining the phenomenon, a trade analyst said, “The combination of producer Vipul Shah and director Anees Bazmee can’t go wrong. The added advantage is that it is the solo release this week. So, it faces no competition. It should be a huge hit.”

International rapper Snoop Dogg and British bhangra band RDB are another big attraction in the film. The film’s music has already sold over 5,00,000 CDs and cassettes worldwide.
